President's News and Notes
By Gilbert Gonzalez

Hello,

I want to report to you on my experience at the STC Technical Communication Summit. This was STC's 56th annual conference, and I was a first-time attendee. First off, I took advantage of the pre-conference certificate program. I took classes on both Saturday and Sunday, along with an entire day of required sessions on Tuesday. I signed up for the Technical Communication Manager Certificate track. I want to let you know that I found these sessions incredibly valuable. I was in a classroom with knowledgeable colleagues and a great instructor. This certificate program curriculum was carefully planned and was a very enjoyable learning experience. I walked away from the Summit with a wealth of management knowledge that I could immediately put into use at the workplace.

One of the many high points of this conference was the awards banquet. I was privileged to sit at the table with two of our chapter members who each received the distinction of Associate Fellow: Lu Rehling and Susan Becker. It was great to see the society honoring those members of our profession who contribute to both the STC and to the technical writing profession in general.

The other sessions I attended were all of exceptional quality in both the content that was delivered and the speakers' effectiveness. STC put together an admirable conference. I know that the current economy has kept many of you from attending the conference, but as the economy improves, I hope that more of you will take advantage of either national or regional STC conferences, or maybe both.

I returned home with the realization that I should have regularly attended these STC conferences throughout my career. This was my first conference, but it will not be my last. I plan to add these conferences to my continuing education efforts in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Gilbert Gonzalez
